A Governors Bay resident has captured dangerous driving of a motorist on Christchurch’s Port Hills.

The offending vehicle was filmed on a dash cam overtaking another vehicle on Dyers Pass Road on a blind corner and on double yellow lines.

The motorist who captured the footage said the incident happened at 5.48pm on Tuesday while he was heading from the city to Governors Bay.

“I have a dash cam – due to the number of bad driving incidents experienced over the past 12 months.”

“The police took a report, but are not able to prosecute due to the driver not being identified in the dashcam images.”

The Governors Bay resident said this type of driving has been an issue for over 4 years.

“The police have done absolutely zero to manage the issue.”

Another Governors Bay resident said “this is unfortunately nothing new. I’ve had this done to me at least three times and both my son and daughter have too, especially coming home later in the evening.”

“It’s actions like this that takes innocent peoples’ lives and I’m petrified driving home both via Dyers Pass Road and Lyttleton as it’s a regular thing.”

“We’ve reported heaps of regos and I’ve now got a dash cam, but nothing changes.”

In November last year, the Christchurch City Council contracted Higgins Construction to widen Dyers Pass Road in places and to install 3km of guardrail.

Council transport planning and delivery manager Lynette Ellis said the road had a high crash rate and the steep terrain means that when crashes happen, they often result in severe injuries.”
