Christchurch buses introduce real-time stop information screens

Metro buses in Greater Christchurch have started to use technology that allows passengers to see real-time information about the next three stops, including their distance, directly from their seats.

The initiative, which began with the installation of screens on four buses, is expected to extend to all of Metro's electric fleet, approximately 70 buses, by the end of the year.

Public Transport Operations Manager Derek Walsh said “this is an exciting step for Metro, as we make this live information more available for our customers, improving the overall experience and accessibility of our services.”

The screens are not only designed to display stop information but will also serve as a platform for customer communications, potentially replacing traditional paper posters.

“We intend to display customer information on these screens – reducing the need for paper posters.”

Route 8 Port to Port, a popular route connecting customers to and from the airport, is among the routes likely to see the new technology soon.

The screens function via GPS trackers installed in all Metro buses, which monitor the buses' locations, directions, and arrival times. This technology also underpins the real-time network map available to Metro riders.

Feedback from other cities has indicated that passengers appreciate the added convenience and information, particularly those unfamiliar with the network or city.

“We know from customer feedback and other cities’ experiences that people will appreciate having this addition on our buses, particularly for those not so familiar with our network or city.”
